驴Qu茅 es MassRelay?

The relay operator will type the words you say, so that someone with hearing loss and/or speech disability can read your conversation.
During your conversation, just say "Go Ahead" or type "GA" on your TTY every time you finish a thought. This tells the other party it is their turn to converse.

驴Qu茅 es TTY?

Hearing individuals can use any type of phone to call TTY users. An operator comes on the line to relay the call. The operator types the hearing person's spoken words. The TTY user reads the typed words and responds with a typed message, which the operator reads aloud to the hearing person.
How Do I call using my phone?
- Dial 711 or 1-800-439-0183. An operator will answer the call by saying "Massachusetts Relay" and will provide you an operator number.
- Provide the operator with the full number you wish to call, including the area code. You may give the operator your name and the name of the person you are calling.
- The operator will dial the number. When the other party answers the relay process begins.
- The operator will act as the go-between for the conversation. The operator will type everything you speak for the TTY user to read, and, in turn, speak everything the TTY user types back to you.
- You may need to talk slower than usual because everything you say is being typed.
- Talk directly to the called person, not the operator. Avoid saying, "Tell him/her"
- You can say "GA" to tell the other party to "go ahead" when you finish a thought and are ready for a response.
- To end the call, the operator will type "SK" (stop keying) after you have said goodbye.
聽Tips for hearing people:
- Don't be nervous. Relay calls are almost identical to any other call, and besides, operators will explain how relay works to new users.
- Be patient. Relay calls have frequent pauses to allow the operator to relay the conversation.
- Don't be surprised if the operator is a man speaking for a woman or a woman speaking for a man.
- Speak directly to the TTY user, not the operator. Avoid saying, "Tell her/him ."
- Speak slower and clearly to give operators enough time to type your words.
- Be aware that operators may type background sounds and chatter, verbal gestures like laughter, and other things outside your conversation.

TTY users can call someone by typing their conversation to a relay operator. The operator reads aloud the typed message to the other party. Then the operator types the other party's spoken reply to the TTY user. Instead of using a TTY, many relay callers prefer to hold phone conversations over a computer. This requires a modem and special communication software.
聽How do I call using my TTY?
- Dial 711 or the TTY/ASCII number 1-800-439-2370. An operator will answer the call by typing "MASS RELAY OPR" followed by the operator's number and either an "F" for female or "M" for male operator.
- Provide the operator with the full number you wish to call, including the area code. You may give the operator your name and the name of the person you are calling.
- The operator will dial the number. When the person you are calling answers the operator will announce that this is a relay call and then begin the relay process.
- The operator will act as the go-between for the conversation. The operator will repeat aloud everything you type. In turn, the operator will type everything the other party says for you to read on your TTY screen.
- When you finish a thought type "GA" to tell the other person to "go ahead" with their response.
- To end the call, you can type "SK" to say "stop keying" and this will close the conversation.

HCO or Hearing Carry Over is provided for people who can hear yet have a speech disability. HCO users type their side of the telephone conversation on a TTY, and the operator voices what is typed to the other person. When the other person responds verbally, the HCO user hears and types a response, and so on.
To request HCO, type "HCO PLS GA" ("HCO please, go ahead"). You may set up a Caller Profile and request an automatic connection in HCO when you place calls to MassRelay. Customer service representatives can assist you in setting up a Caller Profile.

VCO

View slideshow demonstration (comming Soon)
VCO stands for Voice Carry-Over. VCO allows someone who is deaf, hard of hearing, or late-deafened to speak directly to a hearing person, and then read that individual's responses on a TTY. There is an operator on a VCO call to type every word spoken by the hearing person. These typed words appear as text on the TTY screen for VCO users to read and then respond to using their own voice.
VCO-to-VCO also enables calls between two people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or late-deafened, but prefer to use their own voice. Each caller voices their own portion of the conversation. An operator then types the words of one VCO user to the other VCO user. In this way, both VCO users speak in their own voice, and both read responses on their own TTY devices.
聽Persons who were once able to use a standard telephone and prefer to use their own voice often prefer VCO. It feels more natural. To request VCO, say or type "VCO PLS GA" ("VCO please, go ahead"). You may set up a Caller Profile and request an automatic connection in VCO when you place calls to MassRelay. Customer service representatives can assist you in setting up a Caller Profile.
How to place a VCO call:
- Dial 711 or 1-800-439-2370.聽 A relay operator will answer the call with "MA RELAY OPR" and an operator identification number.
- Type "VCO PLS GA" or press the "REL MSG" key on your VCO phone.
- The relay operator will respond with "VOICE NOW GA"
- Give the relay operator the ten (10) digit number you wish to call along with any other important information you wish, such as your name or the name of the person you are calling.
- The operator will dial the number.聽 When the person you are calling answers, the operator will announce that this is a relay call, then type "VOICE NOW GA" to begin the relay process.
Tips for VCO calls:
- Set up Relay Preference to inform the operator of your relay calling preferences.
- If you do not have Relay Preferences, you must type "VCO PLS" and wait for the operator to type "(VOICE NOW) GA" before you begin speaking.
- Do not start speaking to the operator until you see "(VOICE NOW) GA."
- VCO is turned off while the other party is speaking, so the operator will not hear the VCO user before receiving a "GA."
- Do not press any keys while the operator is connecting the call, because the operator will not know whether you want to use TTY or VCO.
- You can request a male or female to relay your call as long as one is available.

STS means Speech-to-Speech. STS is provided for people who have difficulty being understood on the telephone. STS callers can make and receive phone calls using their own voice or a voice synthesizer. STS calls are handled by relay operators who are specially trained to understand unique speech patterns. This skill allows the operator to repeat clearly every word spoken by the STS caller, which makes it easier for the other party to understand the conversation.
Anyone who uses a digital voice synthesizer, voice enhancer, sound board, or electric larynx device can place STS calls. Speech disabled people can use STS to communicate with TTY, VCO, and HCO users, as well as others with speech disabilities.
An STS Caller Profile is highly recommended to speed call setup and also provides a 10-number speed-dial list for frequently called numbers. Customer service representatives can assist you in setting up an STS Caller Profile.
聽How to call using STS
- To reach an STS operator, dial 711 or 1-800-439-0183.
- The operator will answer by saying, "Massachusetts Relay operator XXXX. Go ahead."
- Say: "STS" or "Speech to Speech."
- An STS operator will come on the line and say: "Massachusetts STS operator XXXX. Go ahead."
- Give the operator the number you want to dial.
- The operator will explain STS, if necessary, and verify the number with you before dialing.
- The operator will ask you two questions: "Should I tell them who is calling?" and "Would you like to ask for a specific person?"
- Answering, yes, to these questions is optional. It is your call, and you control what information you want the operator to have.
Tips for STS calls:
- Set up Relay Preferences to inform the operator of your calling preferences.
- If you expect to reach an answering machine, dictate an entire message to the operator before the call is connected.
- Save time by providing the operator an initial message before the call is connected. The operator will connect the call and convey the message immediately.
- Ask the operator to record important information mentioned throughout your conversation, so you can refer to it later in your call.
- Set up a Speed Dial Profile to store the numbers of up to 10 people you frequently call.
- Ask the operator to stay in the background, and you can decide when the operator will re-voice what the other party did not understand.
